Our former country life - Part 2

I have always been a traditionalist when it comes to interiors. My first apartment I bought in the early 90s was very "Jane Churchill", all blue, white and yellow with florals, checks and stripes. The walls were sponged, the carpets blue and "tobacco" and the decor the same mix of chintz and check that you came to expect from that era. My first house that I renovated in Bowral, was more of a French Provincial style with a lot of greys, neutrals, blues and whites. So, when I met my husband, although by then I was a diehard classical American style Hamptons design wannabe tragic, I felt I should try a complete departure and do something completely new and out of character. Apart from which, the landscape and house design somewhat dictated the interior design and decor and I was happy to go along for the ride.

So this meant I would forgo architraves, fancy skirting boards, cornices and anything else that resembled traditional architecture or interior design. All in all, the softness, gentle details and comforting touches that to me make a house a home. After all, I was ready for a change - I wanted to be bold, radical and adventurous. I was ready to give up the classic styles, lines and aesthetics I had been so drawn to and comforted by for so many years. I wanted to be bold and try something completely against my natural instinct and leaning......as it turned out this was a hard lesson I learnt.

Having previously always had traditional Shaker style all white kitchens, I departed this look and went for something completely modern, functional and utterly appropriate for this style of house.

The kitchen was a combination of timber veneer and white cupboards.

The island bench was 4 metres long, with a Caesarstone benchtop. The original design was actually a metre shorter but once it was installed I realised I needed more bench space and had the design extended. I think it was well worth it. I love the deep profile and waterfall edge. It was the most fabulous and functional kitchen and the hub of our house. The cupboards and under counter spaces were all timber veneer with soft close drawers. I have learnt not to do cupboards underneath bench tops as they are a waste of space and a pain in the neck! The benchtop was over 1.5 metres deep with plenty of room for someone to perch and for storage beneath.

The pendant lights above the island are from Ikea. I tried all three different sizes and settled on this.

The back of the island had cupboards in front of the stools which provided extra storage for less often used items such as crockery. The bar stools are from Matt Blatt. 

The splashback was smokey glass and despite my initial reservations re cleaning, it was a great decision and reflected the amazing views and made the kitchen seem to go on forever.

After much deliberation, I decided on an induction cooktop. This turned out to be my nemesis. I hated it. Although the slimline design was perfect for this style of kitchen it was hard to use, manage, handle and clean. I wish I had been able to have a gas cooktop, but as we were in the country and far from town utilities it meant we would have to  have bottled gas to supply the cooker and that translated to extra cost. So I opted for an Electrolux Induction cooktop. This also meant that I had to buy all new cookware that was suitable for induction and learn a whole new way of cooking. Although despite my reservations, I do now miss the rapid boil aspect!
