New York, New York or LA, LA?

I am currently trying to finalise my itinerary for my trip to the US in August. It's very exciting because I am going away for ten days, and my dear husband has kindly offered to relinquish his right to join me in favour of minding the kids. What a guy! The purpose of the trip is for research/buying/inspiration. I'm attending the NY Gift Fair then spending several days scouring the interior design stores, buying stuff for the house and looking for business opportunities.

I had initially thought I would spend about four days in New York, then go out to the Hamptons for two nights days and stop in LA on the way home for another two. However, my time is very limited, and taking away travel I actually only have about 7 days on the ground. In planning my time getting to the Hamptons, I realise I will only have about 36 hours there and it's quite a logistical challenge getting there and back. So I'm probably going to have to eliminate one stop, either the Hamptons or LA.

Here's where I'm staying in New York. The London NYC.

The lovely Matthew Frederick, designer extraordinaire, (who I posted about recently) has been a huge help and source of information, advice and suggestions and has even kindly offered to let me join him walking the gift fair for a day to show me the ropes. How brilliant is that! He has also been very generous giving me tips for hotels, restaurants, travel options, shops and the like. When I posed this question to him, he suggested that the Hamptons was a better option over LA. So I thought I'd see what everybody else thought, because I'm still undecided.

Here's the dilemma - have been to NY three times but not for about 5 years. Have been to the Hamptons once, but not for 7 years. Have not been to LA for any more than a stopover for 20+ years. It takes 3+ hours by bus or train to get to the Hamptons and I'll need a car when I arrive there to get around and see everything I want to see - including revisiting Georgica Pond. I then have to somehow make my way back to JFK about 36 hours later, drop off the car etc etc.

Here's where I'm booked to stay in LA. The Chamberlain West Hollywood.

Question - if you were going to the US looking for inspiration, homewares shopping, design ideas, business opportunities and some fun, would you go to the Hamptons or stop in LA? I'm rather intrigued by LA I must say, and the thought of staying in a groovy hotel in West Hollywood is very appealing, checking out the local design industry. But if it's not all that great and I can find most of what's there in New York anyway, should I go to the Hamptons? My only thought  is that a day or two lounging by a pool looking out over sprawling LA and breaking up the flight home might be a nice idea.

Thoughts, recommendations, suggestions welcome......
