Title : A bit of Christmas spirit!
A bit of Christmas spirit!
You all rallied and I'm so appreciative of all the wonderful and supportive comments and emails. Your understanding and sympathy was a much needed antidote to a week I'd rather forget. Yes, you're all right, this too shall pass and it will all be a distant memory, and the house looks great and I should be grateful for everything good and positive in my life. But I can tell you I was pretty ready to strangle more than a couple of people by the end of last week and put the "For Sale" sign up in the front yard!
In fact, today there were two Santa's little helpers. The Santa from Sunday rearranged his whole working week to be able to fit us in, planning to work in the evenings to get it done by the weekend. Then I had a call this morning from the other guy who came on Thursday night saying a job had fallen through and he was at the house ready to start laying and he could finish by tomorrow afternoon. Panic set in and completely unaccustomed as I am to anybody being helpful or accommodating at this point, I had to give the first Santa the gentle let down in order to get the floor done asap, given the kitchen goes in on Wednesday. He was kind and understanding and told me to look after myself and just get in the house for Christmas.
On that note, I was feeling a little happier and more buoyed by the situation and this afternoon having left the house, I can actually say I walked away with a smile on my face for the first time in months - despite the fact that it's only 15 degrees and raining today and it's supposed to be summer. It felt so good not to walk out grumbling, bitching, moaning, complaining, tense, angry, ready for a fight and resentful about paying yet another bill. I just smiled and thought how great my house is going to look. AHHHHHHHHH!
The only benefit to all this rain is for our new turf which is starting to look a bit on the brown side.
Hope the new turf gets a bit greener and doesn't die before we get to move in! There's a lot of landscaping and planting to be done in the new year. Can't wait to get those hydrangeas in.
This is the levelling the new floor man had to do to improve the previous work. Concrete had to be poured over the dips, gaps and troughs to even out the floor level.
Here's one of Santa's helpers laying the floor, with great ease and speed!
I'm sure you were nervous/aghast when I mentioned a vinyl floating floor - but I reckon it's pretty damn good, despite the ordeal getting it laid. It was about $10k cheaper than the real thing and it never has to be sanded or re-stained, won't fade or scratch and doesn't sound plastic when you walk on it.
My new Recollections light, I think it was on sale for about $30 - bargain! Love it!
Bedroom wardrobe doors being repainted. Saved me about $2000 per bedroom not replacing them.
Kids bathroom currently packed to the rafters with furniture for the carpet layers.
New carpet in Poppy's room done.
Here's the cute bamboo light from Shades of Light I was going to use above the bath. It's in Poppy's room now and I'm tempted to paint it pink so it has more punch.
Carpet done in Charlie's room. I'm moving him across the hall to this room since I've painted it this colour.
Another successful local light purchase from Recollections. Fabulous!
Master bedroom carpeted and ready. We spent hours and hours on the weekend getting each room prepared, cleaned and vacuumed. The amount of builders' rubbish, dirt, dust etc we had to move was incredible.
Another lovely light from the US. Had this converted, but it wasn't complicated.
Our ensuite not looking so glamorous.
Finally, the laundry pendants, again a Recollections find.
So as you can see things are coming together slowly but surely. The kitchen is being finished tomorrow and the marble bench tops arrive Wednesday. Can't wait for that!
PS Anonymous made a comment last week and asked about my sister's bathroom vanity as seen in Australian Home Beautiful magazine this month, and I think it was made by S&R Kitchens in the Highlands from her custom design. She's in transit in a caravan somewhere in SA. Please feel free to email me directly if you have any questions though. Always happy to help if I can.
