Title : The man who stole Christmas!
The man who stole Christmas!
I'd like to reveal who he is and tell the whole disappointing and hugely stressful saga but I will take a leaf out of Tina from The Enchanted Home's book and maintain my silence (at least for a few more weeks). The floor in the whole downstairs was supposed to be laid by last Monday, the kitchen was meant to be finished, the skirtings added and painted and the upstairs hallway sanded and stained before carpets go in tomorrow. We had movers booked for this Thursday and I was ready to start making the house at least a little Christmassy for my two kids, who have seen nary a bauble in our house.
However. as of last Sunday, the floor man has been unable to master the art of the Easylock flooring system. We opted for a vinyl floating floor because the subfloor is so bad and we needed something that would be durable, kid proof, cost effective and easy to lay. Ha!
Despite insisting he has 20 years experience, evidently this is one product he can't figure out. Go figure. I have been insisting for weeks that the subfloor hasn't been prepared properly and he keeps insisting that it's fine. So in panic and frustration I hunted down the distributor and manufacturer from Brisbane who agreed to come to the house and see what the problem was. Apparently there is no problem! After a lot of chest beating and swearing and agro and arguing about the product being defective and the installer being a incompetent, nobody had a solution. So I rang around Sydney to try to find independent installers who would come and give their opinion. Was it the product or the layer or the floor?
Anyway, the first guy came on Thursday night and laid 5 rows in 5 minutes and declared there was nothing wrong with the product only the floor preparation was inadequate. But he is too busy to do anything before the new year. The second guy came this morning from Windsor, Sunday 7am (the one morning my 2 year old sleeps in) and declared there was nothing wrong with the product and the sub floor was ill-prepared. He was a lovely man with a long white beard and looked a little like Santa. He told me "Don't stress love, I'll get you in before Christmas, even if I had to work evenings to get it done for you." I then went to my car and burst into tears!
Preparing for the INAUGURAL SWIM in our pool |
At least the sky was a picturesque blue and a glorious day - notice new pool fence |
Interior of pool cabana painted and ceiling a gorgeous aqua |
Just need a whole lot of stunning hot pink bougainvillea to grow over it now. |
Despite it being one of the most unpleasant experiences of the build, the pool is fabulous. |
Ready, set, go! |
First sunbake on our new, as yet unpainted, deck. |
My husband has a new job as the poolman! |
The roof is being painted as we swim. |
It was freezing but I felt I had to go in. Love my tiles - all worth the trouble. |
We did have our first swim in the pool yesterday afternoon, and were determined to be the first as it turns out we won't be the first to use our toilets! I found evidence of this yesterday despite having signs strapped to each loo saying "Do not use". My husband says I can't blame them for needing to go to the toilet, but I'm absolutely disgusted and feel violated!
I don't know when we will be moving in, and it looks like we won't be able to have Christmas at our house as planned. I have already cancelled one lot of movers and we still don't have anybody to sand and stain the hallway and stairs. So a last minute move to my parents' place for Christmas looks likely. We don't have a tree, or a wreath or anything except a few measly little advent calendars propped up on windows. Do you feel sorry for me yet? Am I painting a sad and pathetic picture for you?
I want to be making gingerbread houses with my kids, baking cookies, making decorations and cards, hanging wreaths and garlands and sparkly lights, and creating a gorgeous tree. I want to think about something else, to be listening to carols and Michael Buble, and taking in the Christmas spirit in shopping centres and getting out the kids' stockings and Christmas snow globes and buying myself a pretty new dress for Christmas Day. But I'm fighting with builders, and painters, and roof restorers and racing around with thousands of dollars cash in envelopes, and fighting off people handing me invoices and chasing payments and not finishing jobs properly and not turning up because it looks like rain and ........
Hopefully things will turn around this week and improve, because at this point we are feeling very deflated about the whole thing. I'll keep you posted.
PS sorry for the depressing purge!
