A Super Star Decorator - Martyn Lawrence Bullard

What a day!

I attended the Martyn Lawrence Bullard design seminar this morning at Design & Decoration and what a thrill. It was brilliant and I am feeling so inspired and motivated. MLB was delightful.

He spoke for over an hour, off the cuff, about how to create a superstar interior, although it was really about how he created the interiors for the various superstars he has worked with over his 18 year career.

He went through the list one superstar home at a time, showing detailed photos of each star's house and explaining how each room was conceived, designed, where each piece was found, sourced or made, and peppered each with lots of humours anecdotes about his celebrity clients and their particularly tastes, desires and quirks. He also showed photos of his own house in LA which was once owned by Gloria Swanson and then William Faulkner.

He was very engaging and spoke in detail about the houses he has decorated for Cher, Cheryl Tiegs, Kid Rock, Tamara Mellon, Sharon & Ozzie Osborne, Ellen Pompeo and Elton John & David Furnish.

He spoke candidly and openly without betraying his celebrity client's confidence, and came across as a charming, unassuming, normal, delightful and intelligent man with a wicked sense of humour and gentility. Oh and that laugh!

His designs at this level are truly beyond anything you could conceive of without the budget and scale that he is accustomed to working with. ie $50,000 dining tables and $1 million decorating budgets.

He spoke of sourcing pieces from all over the world for clients, from countries such as India, Russia, Tibet, Istanbul, Morocco, Turkey, Indonesia and all over the US and Europe. He bought extraordinary antique pieces from remnant houses, palaces, demolished landmarks, castles and temples, such as lintels, fireplaces, floorboards, pillars, arches, windows, doors and furniture, for use in these amazing houses and turning these extraordinary pieces into design statements in their homes. He also buys unusual and irreplaceable items from auctions around the world, many of which are hundreds of years old, and even from the sales of movie sets (some from the old MGM Studios).

He mentioned stencilling a wall in Cheryl Tieg's bedroom, which was made up of 7 different stencil patterns, but not created with paint. Instead he used tea and coffee to create a pale, aged patina.

So much of the work is bespoke and thus utterly unique, and the licence and budget he has to create the most extraordinary and one of a kind design is mind blowing.

The queue to buy his book started first thing

After the seminar he kindly signed his book for hours
After the seminar, MLB sat for hours signing books for everyone who had previously queued to buy one. He took the time to chat to each fan, personalise each inscription and stop for a photo. He was charming and gracious and didn't for a moment appear bored or fed up.

If you want to read more about his style and decorating philosophy, his book is a must read.

They must have sold 100s of copies of the book and his signature candles

MLB candles have a subtle beautiful scent and his signature style of unique design

The man himself signing my book

And here's proof - I'm still in shock!

My treasured copy......

And his darling inscription - he took the time to personalise each copy.
He said his motto was "Don't keep anything for best - use it every day". So I'm digging out the good dinner set, the silver and the linen and using it for every day. As he says, no point saving things for best, when you should be your best each day.

I am now inspired to spread my design wings, be a bit more creative, adventurous and spirited in my decorating and trying to make every day just a little bit more fabulous, darling!
